Heatsinks are designed to keep the PC temperature cool and in particular the central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processors so that it does not over heat. The heat generated through the heatsink is dispersed into the surrounding air. All CPU's (Central Processing Unit) require a heatsink and some require cooling fans as well. A heatsink that does not use a fan is called a passive heatsink and a heatsink that uses a fan is called an active heat sink. Heatsinks are mainly made out of aluminium alloy and will have fins.
