The processor is referred to as the CPU (Central Processing Unit) or the central processor and is the brains of the computer where most processes take place. The processor is the most significant part of the computer system.
Current CPUs are small and square with metallic connectors / pins on the underside. The CPU is placed directly into the CPU socket pin side down on the motherboard. Current CPUs will have a heatsink and small fan that disperses any heat produces by the CPU. Each motherboard can only support one type of processor, so it is imperative to check the specifications of the motherboard before replacing or upgrading the CPU.
