3D printer filament is the material that is used in 3D printing to create an object. 3D printing essentially works by using a compatible 3D printer to layer the filament material on top of itself over and over to produce a 3D model of a digital design, which can then be used in a range of personal and professional industries. There are several different types of filament available, each with their own unique properties and benefits, which we stock right here at Box. These include PLA, TPU and PETG filament which you can find out about below.
PLA (Polylactic Acid) filament is one of the most widely used materials in 3D printing. It is made from natural materials such as corn starch or sugarcane and is biodegradable. PLA filament is incredibly easy to use and produces a high-quality print, making it a common material used by beginners with their Hobbyist 3D Printer models. Using PLA filament, even the most novice designers can produce high-resolution prototypes, figurines, jewellery and other decorative items, with a fine degree of detail and a sturdy build quality. Being one of the most commonly used 3D printer filament types, you can also expect PLA filament to be one of the most affordable with a 1KG spool, 1.75mm in diameter costing around £15.
PLA Pro filament is a modified version of PLA that is stronger and more durable as the name suggests. It is also made from natural materials and is biodegradable, which means like PLA filament it is a sustainable material to use as wasted filament and any defective prints can be recycled. The real defining characteristic of PLA Pro filament is that it is more heat-resistant than traditional PLA and as such can be used for printing functional parts like gears and mechanical equipment in construction and engineering practices. Many Professional 3D Printers will often be found using PLA Pro filaments and others like it, to produce their prints and models.
PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) filament is a type of thermoplastic that is also renowned for its durability and strength. Like PLA Pro filaments, PETG remains a popular choice for creating functional parts, such as gears and mechanical parts. It is also highly resistant to heat and chemicals, making it a great choice for printing objects that will be used in harsh environments where exposure to abrasive substances is likely. Due to the higher print quality and its compliance with many industrial safety standards for 3D printing, PETG filament is slightly more expensive than the average filament which is worth keeping in mind if you are planning multiple prints.
TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) filament is a type of material used for 3D printing flexible and durable parts. It is made of thermoplastic polyurethane, which is known for its versatility, resistance to impact and abrasion, and ability to withstand high temperatures. Commonly used for creating parts that require some degree of flexibility and durability, TPU filament is often used in phone cases, automotive parts and even sporting equipment. It is also often used for making toys, figurines, and other objects that require a high print quality and intricate detail.
