Integrated RV Sensors

Regular hard disk drives can impact the performance of a multi-bay system by generating 'knock-on' vibration. The MG Series ensures high reliability by minimising vibration effects through their advanced control and sensing technology. Multiple sensors detect the slightest shock and built-in RV (Rotational Vibration) sensors compensate for any rotational vibration detected, eliminating the possibility of 'knock-on' vibration in multi-bay server systems.

Toshiba’s innovative Stable Platter Technology minimizes vibrations by stabilizing the motor shaft at both ends. And that means improved tracking accuracy and maximum performance during read and write operations. In addition, Toshiba’s Dynamic Cache Technology, a self-contained cache algorithm with on-board buffer management, optimizes how the cache is allocated during read/write to provide the high-level performance demanded by real-time domains.

High Storage Density Level

The MG08 and MG07 Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) HDDs use a helium-sealed design, providing the power-efficient capacity and storage density needed by cloud-scale and enterprise storage solution providers to achieve their TCO objectives. The MG08 and MG07 Series also utilise Toshiba Group’s laser welding technology to ensure the helium remains securely sealed inside the drive enclosure. The MG08 Series features a 16 TB 9-disk model, while the MG07 Series features both 14 TB 9-disk and 12 TB 8-disk models.

Enterprise users need flexibility - the MG Series meets this need with a choice of 6 Gbit/s SATA and dual-port 12 Gbit/s SAS interface options as well as block size on demand (512e, 4Kn, 512n). Additionally, there are options for Toshiba hard drives with Self Encrypting technology or with Sanitize Instant Erase (SIE) technology, which means that in an instant all data is erased, without the need for overwriting the drive for hours.

The new SAS interface models provide the benefits of 12Gbit/s[2] SAS transfer rates and enhanced power management features for seamless integration with the latest generation of data center infrastructure. The MG04 series is specifically designed for midline and nearline business critical workloads. The new MG04 series 6TB models offer a 50 per cent[3] increase in max capacity from prior MG03 generation 4TB models and a 30 per cent[4] increase in sustained data rate. These enterprise HDDs support both industry-standard 4K native and 512e Advanced Format sector technologies for optimum performance in the latest generation servers and storage systems. Emulated 512e Advanced Format sector technology performs best in legacy applications requiring 512 sector lengths using aligned-write environments. Both the 6TB MG04ACA and MG04SCA models offer Toshiba persistent write cache technologies, designed to help protect against data loss in the event of sudden power loss, while also helping to improve performance and data reliability. Model options supporting SAS and SATA commands to enable sanitize "instant" cryptographic erase (SIE) are also available. Spinning at 7,200 rotations per minute (RPM), the MG04SCA and MG04ACA deliver nearline-class seek performance to improve application response times. At 6TB, the higher capacity per spindle saves rack space and reduces the footprint and operational burden of business-critical servers and storage systems to help optimize total cost of ownership in high-density scale-out environments. The 6TB models provide 50 percent better power efficiency (watts per terabyte) than the previous 4TB drive generation. "Our customers expect to benefit from the increased capacity, efficiency and performance made possible by the latest industry-standard interface and long sector technologies," said Martin Larsson, Vice President, Toshiba Electronics Europe, Storage Products Division.
