5 Tips For Better Sleep Using Technology

8th April 2021

Getting a good nights sleep is so important to maintaining a healthy body and mind. Our bodies require sleep in order to repair, refresh and be fit for another day. On average, humans tend to sleep for 7-9hrs (on a good night), however, this isn't always possible. According to one study, it's found that 36% of UK adults struggle to get to sleep at night. So, how can we combat this issue? Today, we're sharing our top 5 ways in which technology can actually help you drift off easier, and enjoy those precious hours of sleep!

1) Monitor Your Sleep

A great way to improve your sleep is by monitoring it! By analysing your sleep stages such as deep sleep, light sleeping and sleep duration, you can help maintain good sleep habits. We're not talking about propping up a camera and recording yourself- all you need is an activity tracker! Simply leave your activity tracker on your wrist when you go to bed, and let it do the work. We recommend the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite which features a built-in sleep monitoring function to record and analyse your sleep habits. Another option is an Apple Watch! With an Apple Watch, you can set and achieve your personal sleep goals with the Sleep app, which has been designed to establish a regular bedtime routine and keep track of your sleep.

2) Mimic Sunrise and Sunset

Set the mood for bedtime with low, relaxing lighting and mimic the morning sunrise with smart lightbulbs. Setting timed lighting patterns each morning and evening is a great way to implement a stable sleeping pattern and will prevent those sleepless nights in the long run. A great option is the Philips Hue White and Colour Ambience kit, which lets you control Philips smart lightbulbs at the touch of a button. Simply connect your Hue to the Hue Bright and set up the wake-up routine, which will slowly brighten your lights at a pre-set time to help you start your day calm and refreshed. Set a sleep routine for your evenings, to help your mind prepare for a good night's sleep.

3) Drift Off to Music

A great way to clear your mind from distractions before drifting off to sleep is by listening to music. We love the Sleep Timer feature on this Philips Wireless and Dab+ radio, which lets you fall asleep with your favourite station playing in the background. Simply set the clock's Sleep Timer to play the radio for an hour or two, and after the preset time has elapsed, the radio turns off! We'd recommend a classical, soothing station to really achieve that relaxing atmosphere.

4) Practise Mindfulness

Before settling into bed, we'd recommend practising some mindfulness techniques to relax your mind and body. A smart assistant is a great way to bring mindfulness into your home. Ask your Google Home or Nest to 'Help me relax' or 'Play ambient noise' for the ultimate calming vibe. You can even listen to specific sounds, such as white noise, forest and even fireplace sounds! Link to a Headspace account to enjoy guided meditation sessions. Want to give yoga a go? Your Google Nest is the perfect companion and can be used to display a wide range of yoga positions which you can follow.

5) Install Electric Blinds

Exposing your body to natural sunlight in the mornings is a great way to improve your sleep routine and natural body clock. There's nothing better than waking up to the sunlight shining through your window and feeling refreshed. Well, with electric blinds you don't even need to get out of bed! This Somfy Electric Blind kit is the perfect solution. Plus, enjoy a clean and stylish look thanks to the cordless design! When coupled with the Somfy TaHoma Smart Home System, you can set programmed times which will automatically open and close the blinds to your personal preference.
