5 Ways to Add Personal Style to a Rented Kitchen

17th March 2021

We don't know about you, but we spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Whether we're cooking a meal for the family, getting our Bake-Off on, or entertaining friends. It's a place to feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed. If you're renting, the kitchen is probably the first place you want to kit-out and stamp with your style. However, you may be held back by limitations preventing you from getting creative. Even if you can, you might not want to invest in spending so much money redecorating a rented property and painting all of its walls. Luckily, there are a few easy ways to put your own mark on your kitchen and achieve that cosy-vibe you've been longing for.

1. Add Warm Lighting

There's nothing worse than stark, bright lighting overhead when you're trying to relax, right? Warm-up your space by simply switching out your current lightbulbs for a cosier option. We recommend switching to a smart light bulb which can be controlled via your smartphone or smart assistants such as GoogleHome or Siri. Dim the lights to create a romantic mood, change colours for when the friends are round, and keep it warm for everyday use for a relaxing, ambient atmosphere.

For small kitchens and spaces, we'd recommend the TCP Classic WiFi Smart Bulb which works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Sisi, and doesn't require a hub. Larger kitchens, or spaces with 2-3 light fixtures, would benefit from the Philips Hue White and Colour Ambience GU10 Starter Kit. This starter kit includes three colour smart bulbs and a Hue Bridge to provide full control of the lights and allowing you to set the right mood with warm to cool white light options.

2. Style your Small Appliances

Say goodbye to stark white microwaves and kettles, and say hello to the wide range of stylish appliances out there. A great way to add a touch of your own style to your space is by choosing a unique set of small appliances which work great together. From scandi-style kettles to retro toasters, there's something to suit everyone when it comes to choosing your cohesive theme. Start by selecting a colour scheme, and work from there! We recommend heading to Pinterest and making your own mood boards, collecting pieces that work together to help build your vision. Here are a couple colour trends we love, to give you some inspiration!

3. Florals and Fruits

Nothing brings homely, relaxed vibes better than fresh flowers. Bring nature indoors by adding some colourful flowers, plants (or even a bowl of bright fruits!) to your kitchen units. It sounds so simple- and it is! Colours and textures from plants and produce can really transform a blank slate. Keep it low-cost by using second-hand vases (or even left-over fancy bottles!). Struggle to keep plants alive? Purchase some realistic-looking false ones instead, we wont judge.

4. Open Shelving

If you're a frequent Pinterest user, you'll know all about this trend. Love it or hate it, open shelving is a great way to switch up your kitchen's style. By removing cupboard doors, you can expose the interior of your cupboards and show-off your fancy superfoods. Pop a plant here and there for added 'instagrammability' and store small appliances such as kitchen scales, so they're always at reach when you need them. Oh, and just be sure to keep those cupboard doors and fixtures for the future!

5. Wrap Surfaces

If painting is out of the picture, a great quick-fix is by using vinyl wrap! Vinyl wrap can totally transform your surfaces, and turn that outdated speckled surface into a stunning marble-effect worktop. Choose a colour that will compliment your small appliances and plumbing such as your sinks and taps!

We hope this blog post gave you some inspiration! Do be sure to check with the property owner or landlord if you are unsure of what you can switch and change in your kitchen, and most importantly, have fun! Visit our Blog for more of the latest decor tips and tricks.
