October is Home Security Month, which encourages people to
take a fresh look at their home protection measures.
Just a couple of years ago, this would've meant extra
deadlocks, a door chain and maybe a sensor operated floodlight.
Things have moved on rapidly, though, and technology is
offering new ways for homeowners to secure their property.
At Box we have four main products to help you keep an eye on
your home when you're elsewhere: smart doorbells, the latest security cameras,
alarms and smart sockets.
Smart doorbells
Real-time video doorbells have really taken off in the last
couple of years. They are hooked up to your smartphone and send an alert when
someone rings the bell.
A live video feed begins, complete with two-way
conversation. You can see them, but they can't see you, but you can both talk
and hear each other.
There are obvious benefits, such as when a delivery man
knocks and you're out and you can ask him to leave it in a safe space. But from
a security point of view, the camera also acts as a deterrent for burglars as
they are aware their face has been captured and recorded.
The vast majority of burglars, when interviewed, said they
ring the doorbell before breaking in. The majority of the time, a response from
a smart doorbell will be enough to put them off.
Some of our smart doorbells feature motion detection zones
which can be customised so that you receive an alert whenever someone steps on
your property, giving you extra peace of mind.
There is also night vision available and resolution of up to
1080p.
Security cameras and
alarms
According to reformed burglars, dogs aside, security cameras
and alarms are still the biggest deterrent.
We have a full range of clever cameras which offer a full
range of modern features, including HD footage, night vision, remote access and
two-way audio.
As for alarms, we have a wide range of options with sensors
which can be installed in minutes. Many are wire-free with rechargeable
batteries, and some are even solar powered.
Many of our alarms can be controlled remotely and additional
sensors can installed around the home with ease. Some, like the
SOMFY Home
Alarm Premium, work with Amazon Alexa Nest & Google Assistant
and have sirens indoors as well as outdoors.
Smart sockets
Smart lights and smart plugs and sockets are a great way to
operate electrical devices remotely. That's convenient when you're out of the
house and you want to switch something on before you get home, or just when
you're lying in bed and can't muster the enthusiasm to move.
But it's also a great way to make would-be burglars think
you're in while you're away. Switch the lights on at night and they are sure to
think someone is home.
Unfortunately, the number of burglaries continues to rise.
Taking simply precautions can provide just enough of a deterrent to make them
look elsewhere.
