Hdmi 2.1: The New Standard for the Next Gen

7th October 2020
For most game consoles, PCs and external displays, HDMI has been the mainstream connection for well over a decade. Known for being versatile, the trusty HDMI cable offers support for some of the most popular resolutions out there and can transfer both video and audio over a single cable. Pretty cool when you think about it!

Fast forward to 2020 and it's time to get familiar with the new cable on the block- the HDMI 2.1. Well, although we say new, technically HDMI 2.1 is the thirteenth major revision of the original HDMI standard and was first certified by the HDMI forum back in November 2017.

So, why start using it now you ask? Well unless you've been living under a rock, you'll be aware that now is the first time devices can actually make use of the potential features of HDMI 2.1. We're talking about the PS5 consoles and the Xbox Series consoles of course! HDMI 2.1 features many important benefits. For the first time ever, HDMI can finally compare with the newer DisplayPort connection. It allows for higher resolutions also such as 4K, 8K and even 10K- with a HDMI 2.1 cable you can enjoy 4K at 120Hz refresh rates and 8K at up to 60Hz refresh rates. It also features enough bandwidth to really deliver those impressive video signals needed to properly display HDR content. Gamers, it's finally time to enjoy 4K gaming as it was made to be.

For smooth gaming, HDMI 2.1 also features Variable Refresh Rate (or VRR for short) support, which allows displays to change their refresh rates to match the input source's frame rates. Say goodbye lag and sayonara to screen-tearing, it's time to make full use of your new console's power. Not a console player? PC gamers can also benefit from the new HDMI 2.1. This year we're seeing the release of new GPUs, which you'll be glad to hear, are fully HDMI 2.1 compliant!

To get the most out of your new gaming experience, various TV manufacturers have ensured that their new models support HDMI 2.1 features. LG, Sony, Samsung are just some of the well-known brands with models now on sale to feature some level of compliance. 4K TVs are a great starting point, with support for HDMI 2.1 and the promise of smoother gameplay. The LG CX5, for example, features a higher frame rate, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) all meeting HDMI 2.1 specifications. All ports are of 120Hz standard also, making the CX series a great match for the new consoles.

We think 4K TVs are a great choice for those wanting to enjoy next-level graphics and make the most out of the next-gen consoles- how else are you going to experience the epic graphics? A similar option is the Samsung Q90T Smart TV which can support HDMI 2.1 features, from eARC to HFR (High Frame Rate), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). As the features from HDMI 2.1 are in demand, it's highly likely that manufacturers such as Sony will add HDMI 2.1 support via updates on TV's such as the XH95- which is another great choice for those wanting to game in 4K.

As we mentioned previously, HDMI 2.1 doesn't just stop at 4K- it can support up to 10K displays! While you may not be in a rush for a 10K TV at the moment, an 8K TV is a great choice for those wanting to future-proof their setups and fully experience next-gen graphics. The LG NANO996, Samsung Q950T and Sony ZH8 are all great choices when it comes to an 8K television with HDMI 2.1 support, each with their own unique features; experience the quality of NanoCell technology and Pure Colours with LG, admire Samsungs infinity screen and adaptive picture, and use the power of your voice with Sony thanks to their voice control features.

So, you're probably now ready to purchase a HDMI 2.1 cable, and luckily for you, we have you covered! At Box, you can purchase ultra high-speed HDMI 2.1 cables ranging from 1M to 5M. These cables make a perfect choice, by ensuring high-bandwidth (48Gbps) dependent features are delivered including uncompressed 8K video. For the computer gamer, 4K at 120Hz resolutions can be achieved whilst providing smooth motion. The cables feature exceptionally low EMI (electro-magnetic interference) which reduces interference with nearby wireless devices. They're also backwards compatible and can be used with the existing installed base of HDMI devices! Well, what are you waiting for? It's time to get prepared with an HDMI 2.1.
