Video gamers defy sleep to raise more than 1000 Pounds

27th February 2019

Staff from a Birmingham technology giant battled sleep deprivation and played video games throughout the night to raise money for people with disabilities.

Twenty employees of Minworth-based Box played video games continuously for 24 hours as part of GameBlast19, the UK's largest gaming marathon weekend.

The team raised more than £1,300 for the charity SpecialEffect, which uses technology to help people with disabilities enjoy video games.

Rodney Critchlow, store manager at Box, said: "We were delighted to take part in GlameBlast19.

"A lot of us are keen gamers, but it's still a hefty challenge playing for 24 hours straight. A few people needed a couple of matchsticks in their eyelids to keep going!

"This is the fourth year that the Box team has taken part in the event and we've now raised close to £4,000 for SpecialEffect, which is great.

"It's a cause close to our hearts as we believe everyone should have the chance to enjoy video games."

More than £105,000 has been raised in total by GameBlast19.

SpecialEffect uses things like modified joypads and eye-control technology to enable disabled people to play games.

Box sells an extensive range of technology and computing products through its specialist website and retail shop, including laptops, desktop PCs, phones and tablets, components, monitors and printers.

The business was founded by Mark Jordan in 1996 and today employs more than 100 people.
