Women in Streaming: Kijasmata

8th March 2021

Interview with Kijasmata

UK based Twitch Streamer.

Name: Kijasmata
Pronouns: I don't mind
Based in: Norwich, UK
Platform: Twitch
Streams: Retro games (Spyro the Dragon, Dune 2000, Pharaoh, Tomb Raider etc). Music production, DJ sets.

Hi Kijasmata! Tell us three fun facts about yourself.

Hey there! These kinds of questions are always hard to answer, aren't they? I don't know
what other people think makes me fun but:
  1. I have a lot of stories to tell because I'm super indecisive about what I want to be when I grow up! I've done website development, modelling, photography, marketing, tattooing, magazine editing, TV/film extra work, and fashion design- my current line of work. I have two philosophy degrees (and a lot of student debt).
  2. I have ADHD and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Both of these contribute to my drive to hyperfocus on things I'm interested in, among other things. But I'm an open book when it comes to speaking about my experiences because I don't want people to have to feel stigmatised for existing a bit differently.
  3. I'm just about to start making a Lara Croft cosplay on stream, answering chat's questions about fashion design, and this definitely means I need to do a playthrough of all of the Tomb Raider games!

When did your streaming journey begin, and what inspired you to start?

A few years ago, I started streaming Overwatch. I got a bit too into the game and wasn't sure how I could grow as a person while just streaming Overwatch, so I took a break to think about it and come back. Since I've always loved music, I used music production and learning to DJ as an excuse to start streaming again in November 2020! I now have a balance between work, gaming, and my goals as a music producer which makes for a more enjoyable streaming experience for me and my viewers.

What's your favourite game/content to stream/share? What do you enjoy most about it?

Honestly, these changes! I feel like if I just did one thing, I'd miss streaming something else! That's the beauty of streaming, though - you can change it up and stream a variety of different things and it's always a blast. I like to have a balance between chatting with people, performing (Djing, usually), gaming, and showing other parts of my life on stream.

Do you feel like there is a stigma for women streamers in the industry?

Oh, yeah. Feminism was one of my main areas of study at university, so I think about power dynamics in online spaces a lot. I feel a constant pressure to look a certain way on stream, whether that be to wear more, wear less, wear makeup, not wear makeup, etc. I follow a lot of female streamers on Twitch and I see the kinds of comments they get, and guys just don't get these kinds of comments. And it's an attitude present in many industries - the music or film industries for example. Then there's the pressure from male streamers - the comments they make about some of the well-known female streamers. It definitely feels like there's a club that we're not invited to. That all said, this doesn't represent the majority of the community, I don't think. It's easy to focus on negativity and criticism, but truly there are so many supportive individuals on Twitch that it's a great place to be.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to women who want to begin streaming?

Only one piece of advice? Surround yourself with other women who stream. Even just knowing one or two other women streamers will remind you that you're not alone on those days where you can't handle the comments or the insecurity you feel about what expectations of you are. I hear so many women who stream saying the same things about what upsets them in the community, and it's solidarity with other women that makes the biggest difference.
