Women in Streaming: Paige Harvey

8th March 2021

 Interview with Paige Harvey

UK based Twitch streamer.

Name: Paige Harvey
Pronouns: She/her
Based in: England, UK.
Platform: Twitch
Streams: Horror, Variety and Education. Phasmophobia, Alien Isolation, Elder Scrolls Online, Minecraft and occasional Just Chatting.

Hi Paige! Tell us three fun facts about yourself.

Hello, lovely to meet you!
  1. I have 18 tattoos, most of them I designed myself.

  2. I am a first aider and mental health first aider.

  3. I can sing in multiple languages, including the "Dov" language from Skyrim!

When did your streaming journey begin, and what inspired you to start?

I first started streaming full-time in March 2020, after leaving the games industry where I worked as a Community Manager. Unfortunately, I have two chronic illnesses (one which was undiagnosed at the time) which made working in an office environment difficult, and I wanted to spread my wings a bit and try out new forms of content creation. Streaming on my own channel seemed like the perfect mix of my current skillset and my aspirations.

What's your favourite game/content to stream/share? What do you enjoy most about it?

I've really found my calling with horror games. I love the horror genre, and a lot of people like to be scared, they just don't enjoy experiencing the content first-hand! I try to only play horror games that are fun to be scared by, to that end I play a lot of Phasmophobia, and I'm currently on my second streamed playthrough of Alien Isolation.

I love that being scared in a safe environment can bring us together in a shared moment and the horror genre has so much more to offer than just jumpscares and spooky monsters.

I also love to put education and discussion at the forefront of my streams, and to that end I've created the "Through Our Eyes" stream series which brings marginalized creators together to discuss our lives, successes, challenges and to answer those awkward questions you've always wondered about but never found the right time to ask. The next episode will be on March 27, 2021 and is an LGBTQIA+ special (Co-hosted by the incredible MouseWasTaken https://www.twitch.tv/mousewastaken) where we'll also be looking to raise £2500 for the charity, Mermaids.

Do you feel like there is a stigma for women streamers in the industry?

I do. There are a few preconceived ideas of a female streamer that most women will encounter at one point or another. For example the "boob" streamer, the idea that because a woman is attractive, her content will do better than a mans.

This isn't true, and women often have to work harder to be taken seriously in the streaming environment, simply because of assumptions like that.

There's also the idea that you need to have a "thick skin" to be on the internet, and that you should simply take the high road and ignore trolling or harassment. This is a direct result of the stigma around women in technology, that we're less intelligent, more emotional or somehow lesser than male counterparts in the same industry.

This is wrong. We're just good at what we do.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to women who want to begin streaming?

Decide on your boundaries when you create your channel and stick to them. It's much easier to curate the kind of community you want if you decide what that community will be like before you even start out. Don't be afraid to say no to people who approach you, and be confident that you are worthy of your own boundaries. Don't let anyone cross them, no matter who they are.

Where can people find you online?

If you did want to spend some time with me and my community, you're more than welcome to find me at:
