We all know the feeling when you get booted out of your game as the Internet’s gone down because your housemates’ streaming a film in the next room. With a dedicated gaming router, these problems will be a thing of the past. Having a gaming router can give you a significant advantage when playing competitively, providing you with top download speeds and bandwidth, and little-to-no gaming interference.
You may be forgiven for thinking ‘why should I buy a gaming router? How is it going to be any different from my normal router?’ The main thing that stands gaming routers apart from a regular router is their Quality of Service (QoS) features. Whether it’s streaming a film, uploading and downloading photos, or online gaming, a standard router doesn’t give priority to anything in particular – in other words, it treats everything as equal, which is where you run into problems with lag during online gaming. A gaming router, on the other hand, is programmed to give priority to your gaming needs. For example, some gaming routers give priority to gaming devices ensuring lag-free gameplay. Many also give you the ability to assign bandwidth priorities on the go via their gamer friendly user interface, meaning you can choose who gets what.
Another feature of gaming routers worth mentioning is MU-MIMO (Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output). Although not universal across all gaming routers, MU-MIMO makes your router more efficient, allowing for simultaneous data streaming to multiple users, meaning you can play competitively online while your housemate is streaming Netflix in the next room.
Still not sure whether a gaming router is for you? Take a look through our selection, featuring the likes of ASUS, Linksys, Netgear and TP-Link, there’s sure to be something to meet your gaming needs.
