TV Buying Guide
Be it screen size, panel type, Smart features or resolution, we explain all!
Screen size
When selecting the perfect size TV, you must consider how far you’ll be sitting from the screen as well as the screen resolution.
A great rule to follow for sitting distance is sitting a minimum of 1.5-to-2 times the size of your TV, for higher resolutions such as 4K you can sit closer, but always make you have enough space in the room you’re buying a TV for to reach the minimum sitting distance.
When selecting the perfect size TV, you must consider how far you’ll be sitting from the screen. Smaller displays are best when you’re closer to the screen with a larger screen best enjoyed when watching from a distance.32 inch TVs are perfect for bedrooms and kitchens, while smaller living rooms can fit 40”, 43” and 49” screens.
TVs under 50”
Smaller displays are best when you’re closer to the screen 32 inch TVs are perfect for bedrooms and kitchens, while smaller living rooms can also fit 40”, 43” and up to 49” screens.
Larger TVs above 50”

A larger screen is best enjoyed when watching from a distance. Larger TVs can now fit into even smaller spaces, with their slimmer builds offering great resolutions and wide viewing angles allowing everyone in the room to watch.
If you do have the space, 55” or 65” displays fit in most averaged-sized living rooms and larger bedrooms. With a bigger space or if you want the most immersive viewing experience, a 75 inch television or higher will do just that.
Types of TVs?
Be sure to consider the type of TV you want; choosing from LCD, QLED or OLED will also effect the options you have available for size. With manufacturers focusing on large size TVs, fewer smaller size TVs are being released with new models. For example, if you’re looking for an OLED TV the minimum size you will find is 48”.
Picture quality
Screen resolution and processing rates are the key factors to consider when looking at your next TV purchase.
Why 4K?
4K Ultra HD TVs are four times better than Full HD 1080p with a resolution of 3480x2160 pixels, offering greater detail and a much sharper picture resolution. Some TVs can also upscale a Full HD picture to 4K as well.
TVs also containing HDR (High Dynamic Range) give you better contrast, higher levels of pightness and varied colour palette to deliver a more real life picture.
What can I watch in 4K Ultra HD?
While 4K Ultra HD TVs have been on the market for a while, content has been slow to catch-up. But that’s starting to improve with new content available daily.

A wide range of new movies are available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. You can also find popular sports in 4K on BT Sport 4K UHD and Sky Sports UHD.
If you have a Smart TV, you’ll also find that streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube are quickly expanding their range of 4K Ultra HD content with HDR.
Why 8K?
8K is pushing the boundaries of TV technology in 2020, pinging unprecedented picture quality with 33 million pixels to super-sized screens as big as 98” and beyond! Delivering four times the resolution of 4K, sixteen times that of HD, 8K upscaling transforms flat images into deeper more lifelike visual experiences.
8K content is currently harder to come across, but 8K TVs will upscale all of your content.
More stunning TV features available among our ranges include anti-reflective screens, adaptive picture/sound, active voice amplifiers and direct full array local dimming.
LED, OLED or QLED?
Choosing the right screen technology is also vital to your viewing experience.
What is OLED?
An OLED screen is itself its own light source, giving you excellent contrast, rich colours and deeper blacks.
OLED TVs also have a lower energy consumption than LED and the screens can be super-slim.
What is QLED?
QLED TVs contain a film of particles that control the colour output of the television for a sharper picture.
This gives you 100% colour volume, plus you get a wider, more diverse range of true-to-life colours. You also get higher peak pightness, meaning HDR content looks fantastic.
What is LED?
LED TVs shine a backlight through the LCD panel to display images. While the technology is a bit older now, you can still get great TV deals at excellent value as LED TVs are easier and cheaper to produce.
So what about Neo QLED? Samsung is introducing a whole new display technology, Neo QLED. In 2021, Samsung is taking QLED to the next level enabled by new light source, Quantum Mini LED precisely controlled by Quantum Matrix Technology and Neo Quantum Processor, a powerful picture processor optimized for Neo QLED.
And Micro LED? Samsung will also be making Micro LED available in a traditional TV form factor for the first time, bringing consumers a breathtaking visual experience on an ultra-large next-generation screen. The the new MICRO LED line uses micrometer-sized LED lights to eliminate the backlight and color filters utilized in conventional displays. It is self-illuminating, producing stunningly lifelike colors and brightness through its 24 million individually controlled LEDs.
And what is QNED? Not to be confused with QLED, LGs new QNED ‘quantum nano-emitting diode’ which has recently been announced, uses mini LED technology. This LG backlight tech uses a
huge number of mini LED lights to control brightness and create effective contrast between different areas of the screen.
Look out for look out for HDR options as this will also improve colour and contrast!

What is the best TV for the PS5?
The PlayStation 5 will be able to achieve 120fps, All current 4K televisions can support up to 60 frames-per-second, but if you want to reach the full potential of your new PS5 console and get 4K@120Hz, you’ll need a 4K TV with HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz support.
Two more new features that are being introduced by the PS5 are Variable Refresh Rates (VRR) and Ray-tracing. VRR allows the refresh rates to be adjusted and adapted when needed, through communication between your console and TV. Ray-tracing is controlled by your next-gen console, so this is one thing you don’t have to worry about looking out for when choosing a TV.
The final feature you need to look out for is input latency. This shows the time it takes for your button press to be communicated by the console to the TV for display. Any input latency below 30ms should not be noticeable, but you want this to be as low as possible!

What is the best TV for the Xbox Series X?
The Xbox Series X, along with the PS5 will be capable of outputting 8K content, however, there has not been much mention of 8K games that will be realised with the consoles. There has been more focus on high frame rates, which allow a TV to handle 4K games at frame rates of up to 120fps.
TVs with native 120Hz refresh rates are not widely available, but may start to appear more as HDMI 2.1 grows within the market.
Another feature to look out for in a TV for the Xbox Series X is support for Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM).This feature allows the next-gen consoles to send a signal to the display which will cause it to automatically switch to a low-latency, low-lag mode for gaming.
Other gaming features include, eARC, G-Sync,
freesync and HGiG (HDR Gaming Interest Group)
HGiG recognises TV performance and picture quality then tunes HDR graphics to provide the ultimate HRD gaming experience. If it's available, you can enable this through a setting option on your TV under 'Dynamic Tone Mapping'
Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) enables you to transmit the original full resolution audio signal through an HDMI cable and reproduce the best sound without compromise.
Do I need HDMI 2.1?
If you want to take full advantage of the 120fps capabilities that come with your next-gen console, you’re likely to need a HDMI 2.1 TV.
As most TVs can only achieve up to 60fps, additional features of the HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz support, will allow you to access this level of frame rate for gaming. HDMI 2.1 is also needed enable dynamic HDR and a much higher bandwidth.
That being said, you don’t need HDMI 2.1 to use 4K and with the other amazing features of the next-gen consoles you will still be able to notice a difference in display!
